What Does A Walking Safari Consist Of?
A walking safari, or "trail", as it is known locally, consists of a maximum of eight people walking short distances though the African "bush" in the presence of an armed walking safari officer, or ranger. The ranger is highly experienced in the ways of the bush, and as you walk along, he will explain the many interesting aspects of the bush to the group. He might explain how the local people use various plants, how to extract water from a vine, or how to determine the freshness of a footprint. Should he locate the fresh footprints, or "spoor", of an animal, he may try to track the animal in order that you might encounter it from close quarters. There is a lesson and a surprise around every corner. A walking safari is not a trek - it is a leisurely and informative walk and you are based at a permanent, comfortable base camp throughout! |
Day One
You will be picked up from your hotel in Johannesburg by the trails officer who will be your guide for the next four days. He will drive you from Johannesburg to Klaserie Private Game Reserve, approximately a 6-hour drive. The route becomes very scenic as you descend from the 6000 foot-high plateau on which Johannesburg is situated. Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is part of the greater Kruger National Park Conservation Area and as there are no fences between the two parks, the area is very rich in wildlife. Upon arrival at the camp, choose a tent and relax in the tranquil environs of the campsite.

The Camp
The tented camp is situated on the banks of the Klaserie River under a huge Jakkalsbessie tree. The camp is rustic, but very comfortable. The tents are carpeted and contain two proper beds and mosquito netting on both doors. Ablution facilities consist of open-air showers and flush toilets with unbeatable views! Meals are prepared over an open fire, and your trails officer is truly a gourmet cook. |
Day Two and Three
You will spend the next two full days experiencing the African bush, either on foot, or from an open vehicle.
A Typical Day On Trail
The typical day on a trail consists of an early morning start with a light breakfast, after which the group heads out into the bush for a few hours. The idea is not to see how far the group can walk and the walks are designed for enjoyment, observing and learning. A number of hours on foot may result in only a few kilometres being covered. The group will return to camp in the late morning and after a hearty brunch, spend time relaxing or bird watching in the camp during the heat of the day. In the mid-afternoon, the group will embark on the second of the day's walks, perhaps followed by a short evening game drive in search of the nocturnal residents of the park. Afterwards, return to camp, and spend the evening relaxing around the campfire. A "trail" is by far the most authentic experience one can have of the African bush. |
