| Mozambique is one of Africa's fastest-growing tourist destinations. Years of civil war kept tourists away from the country's stunning beaches, but now hostilities are a thing of the past and the pristine beaches and islands off the coast are one of the continent's best-kept secrets. This short trip can easily be added onto a trip to South Africa, as the luxurious Indigo Bay Island Resort is a very short flight away from Johannesburg. |
Day One
From Johannesburg, take a short flight via Maputo, to the town of Vilanculos. Upon arrival at Vilanculos, you will be met by a representative from Indigo Bay who will assist you with clearing customs & immigration (a visa is required for entry into Mozambique) prior to boarding the air shuttle. You will then take a short transfer by air or boat (weather permitting) to Bazaruto Island.

Indigo Bay Island Resort, Bazaruto Island
The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of small islands situated approximately 40 kilometers off the coast of Mozambique. Bazaruto Island is the largest in the chain (approximately 37kms long and up to 7kms wide) and is the northernmost of the five islands. The spectacular Indigo Bay Island Resort is situated on the western side of Bazaruto Island, approximately 600 kilometres north of the Mozambique capital of Maputo.
The diverse ecosystems contained in the archipelago cater to a wide range of interests. The white beaches and protected reefs surrounding the islands support dolphin, dugong (manatee), game fish and giant lobster. The shallow, crystal clear waters with dazzling soft corals, starfish, anemones, seahorses and a bewildering range of beautiful fish, extend to dive sites where one can expect to see creatures such as green turtles, manta rays, sailfish and a variety of sharks. Big game fishing, including marlin and barracuda, is also on offer. Fauna and flora on the island abound, with flamingoes on the tidal flats, endemic butterflies, hundreds of bird species in the nearby wetlands, and freshwater lakes that are home to large crocodiles. In contrast, the eastern side of the island is composed of huge bare and vegetated sand dunes. |
