Places visited during this trip:
  1. Cape Town (4 nights)
  2. Hermanus (2 nights)
  3. Garden Route (3 nights)
  4. Kwandwe Private Game Lodge (3 nights)

The scenic beauty of The Cape of Good Hope and its environs has built the Cape into one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Wildspace has developed this trip along the coast east from Cape Town that visits the most beautiful properties and locations that have given rise to the region's reputation. In only thirteen days, this trip takes you from Cape Town, along the Garden Route, to a private malaria-free reserve in the Eastern Cape in search of Africa's "Big Five".

Day One
Upon arrival in Cape Town, you will pick up your rental car from the airport office, and drive to your hotel, located close to the Waterfront area of the city. You will spend the next four nights in Cape Town.

Days Two, Three and Four
Cape Town is a stunning and vibrant city situated at the base of the 3000-foot high Table Mountain and surrounded by ocean, forested hills, wine farms and spectacular coastline. You will have three full days to see the city and its surrounds really well, and we have suggested a few activities that would make very good use of your time (Wildspace can arrange these activities in advance, or you keep things flexible and book them yourself as required).

Cape Town City Tour and Table Mountain
In order to familiarize you with the city, we recommend a half-day tour of Cape Town. A short tour might take in a visit to the V&A Waterfront (where there is a great aquarium for kids), a walk around the Cape Castle dating back to the 17th century, browsing the stalls at Greenmarket Square, and much more. A city tour however, is not complete without a trip to the summit of Table Mountain in the new revolving cable car in order to view the city and surrounding coastline from above!
Cape Peninsula Cape Peninsula Drive
A drive around the Cape Peninsula is highly recommended. The spectacular drive takes you to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, where some people claim that the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet - others maintain they meet at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. An interesting stop on the way back to Cape Town is the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, near Simonstown.
Cape Winelands Cape Winelands Tour
The Cape Winelands are located scarcely an hour from Cape Town near the town of Stellenbosch. There are numerous properties offering tours of the winemaking facilities and vineyards, and many offer free wine tastings. The region is fast becoming known for the quality wines produced here.

If one wished to add in a two-night stay at Bartholomeus Klip Farm House, located a short distance northeast of Cape Town, one could easily incorporate this into the itinerary at this point. Click here to view the optional Cape Hinteland Haven extension.

Days Five and Six
Today you will depart early for the small fishing village of Hermanus, located on the coast roughly 100 kilometres east of Cape Town. Hermanus is the world's foremost land-based whale watching site. Each year between July and September, Southern Right Whales come to mate and calve in these coastal waters. Apart from whale-watching, Hermanus has a number of pristine beaches, is a perfect location for scenic walks, and is a good base from which to visit the Southernmost point in Africa, Cape Agulhas. A local guide can be arranged to point out the best whale watching spots, as well as to take you on a short walk to introduce you to the local floral kingdom known as fynbos.

Whale Watching
Protea

The small town of Hermanus is a ninety-minute drive east of Cape Town. It is famous for its "champagne" air, long stretches of beach, mild climate, and the rich floral kingdom. Hermanus is most famous, however, for being the world's best shore-based whale-watching location. The whale seen most frequently in the area is the Southern Right Whale, but other species are occasionally seen. The whales start arriving in June in order to calve and to mate in the shallow water, but the peak time for sighting them is in October. A cliff path stretching 12 kilometres along the coastline provides one with excellent opportunities to study the mammals from close quarters, and one can sometimes get to within 30 meters of whales cruising in the waters below.
Hermanus is also famous for the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, which covers 1446 hectares in the mountains above the town. The reserve is one of the best places to see the unique and beautiful vegetation of this region, known as fynbos, derived from the Dutch for "beautiful bush". The most famous member of the fynbos family is South Africa's national flower, the stately Protea. Wildspace arranges short walking tours that encompass both a walk along the cliff path, as well as a visit to Fernkloof.

Days Seven, Eight and Nine
In the morning you will depart early for the five-hour-long drive along the famous Garden Route, as far as Plettenberg Bay. You will spend the next three nights at Hog Hollow Country Lodge, which has only twelve uniquely individual rooms, each offering uninterrupted views over the indigenous forests and Tsitsikamma Mountains. Spend the next two full days exploring this area with the lodge as your base. Suggested optional activities include boat-based whale and dolphin watching, scenic glider flights over the coastline, a visit to the nearby primate sanctuary, horse riding and river excursions, and magnificent forest walks.

Bunjy jumping at the Plettenberg Bay

Midway along the famous Garden Route is the small resort town of Plettenberg Bay. The town is the perfect base from which to explore the many attractions of what is arguably one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the world. The area is blessed with numerous pristine white beaches, bountiful ocean life in the form of whales, dolphins, seals and Orcas, fantastic weather, and warm waters in which to swim. The lodge will assist you in arranging any number of activities, from glider flights over the coast, through boat trips to observe the whales, to bungy jumping from a nearby 216 meter-high bridge! To revitalize oneself after all this activity, the town also has numerous quality restaurants where you can sample South Africa's unique and interesting cuisine - from Malva pudding to potjiekos.

Days Ten, Eleven and Twelve
Today you will drive three hours east of Plettenberg Bay to Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. Kwandwe is one of the country's few malaria-free game parks, and is home to the "Big Five" of the African Bush (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo). You will enjoy the sumptuous luxury of the lodge for three nights, and each day you will go on two game drives in open vehicles in search of animals.

Day Thirteen
Drive the few hours to the city of Port Elizabeth from where you will catch your return flight to Johannesburg. (If your return flight originates in Cape Town, a nice option would be to drive back to Cape Town on this day and overnight at the Spier Wine Estate, located close to the International airport.)
